The Louder Than Life music event, which was held at the Highlands Festival Grounds in The Kentucky Exposition Center this year, lived up to its name Thursday night, when it kicked off America’s biggest rock event.
The hotline established to answer questions and lodge complaints from people in the area around the festival site received 49 phone calls on a night headlined by nü-metal icons Korn.
The residents of many of the surrounding cities complained about never-ending bass. “I’m hearing the bass really loud, I am hear all kinds of noise, the walls in my home are shaking, the windows are rattling,’” they’d say. That sort of thing was happening to them because of the festival.
“Most of the calls have come from the area east of the festival grounds,” he added. “Camp Taylor, Audubon Park, Poplar Level area, Belknap neighborhood in Highlands, Lynnview—which is slightly south of here—and many others.”
The complaint data is passed on to event producers every day, who can change the direction that speakers point if they detect a problem. However, other factors are beyond their control.
“The wind patterns alter each day somewhat and that plays a part in how the sound travels,” Burmeister noted.
On Thursday, the wind patterns seemed to be blowing east. By Friday afternoon, District 8 Metro Councilwoman Cassie Chambers Armstrong had received more than two dozen calls regarding the event. The District 10 office for Councilman Pat Mulvihill, who represents the area between District 8 and the festival grounds, was not immediately available.
Meanwhile, Nicole George’s District 21—which includes the festival grounds—was relatively tranquil. “I’m not have have my phone ringing off the hook,” said legislative aide Rachel Roarx Friday.
This year’s edition of Louder Than Life will be the second time the event has been held at the fairgrounds, and it will be the first since 2019. Danny Wimmer Presents previously hosted it on Champions Park near River Road in previous years. Due to a pandemic, the 2020 festival was called off.
After the 2019 event, neighbors aired their issues at several city council meetings and with the production firm. Danny Wimmer Presents offered to relocate stages in order to address the concerns, but these proposals were turned down by the Federal Aviation Authority. The site is south of Muhammad Ali International Airport.
“Danny Wimmer Presents looked into some new sound mitigation technology that they are using this year after they didn’t receive approval for any different stage placement,” Roarx added.
